Artist Interview with Gavin Jones
Gavin Jones is one of our favorite local artists and we’re very lucky to have his work displayed throughout the first-floor of the Hotel. We asked him a few questions about art and wrestling. You can find his work at Piscobar and in the Lobby.
C: Basic stuff first! Gavin, where are you from? Did you go to art school? Who is your favorite WWE wrestler?
G: I’m a self taught artist born and raised in New Orleans. My favorite wrestler is the Rock. The People’s Champ. The most electrifying man in sports entertainment. If ya smell what I’m cooking.
C: Your work features some really stunning use of color. Do you have a process in which you create cohesive palettes or does it just come naturally to you?
G: The color palette I use mainly comes from feeling. Attempting for colors to flow into the next, made on instinct at the moment.
C: What inspires you right now? It can be a food, a painting, a color, a building, a smell, a song or one of each.
G: Right now I’m inspired by the energies of peers in New Orleans becoming entrepreneurs and providing platforms for others to provide for themselves and families. Soul Music is also constant inspiration in the studio.
C: What art show or display have you gone to and loved in the past year?
G: The New Orleans Art Center in the St. Claude area has monthly art showings with some of the best artists in New Orleans and supports emerging artists. The works are usually mind- blowing and humbling paintings that cover a wide array of mediums from sculptures to landscapes. Christina Juron (Gallery Director) is passionate about creating and giving artists / patrons an education to continue flourishing in their crafts.
C: Do you have any shows coming up? Where can people find your work outside of the Catahoula?
G: Outside of the Catahoula hotel my work is predominantly in my studio in the St Roch neighborhood of New Orleans. I’m also excited about my work being apart of the newly designed Jack Rose at the Pontchartrain Hotel and the mural painting at Ace Hotel Rooftop pool.
